Cloud Phone Systems. You may have heard of it. It is a popular service right now in the communications world. What is it? Basically, companies are moving the phone system that lived in a closet or data room to a remote data center that is connected over a network. That network is usually the internet, but not always. More on that later. A cloud system still has desk phones (usually) but the brains of the system are housed outside of the companies facility. Instead of owning the equipment, a company pays per month per phone. Very similar to a cell phone contract but the phones have business phone system features.

Why make this move? For a couple of reasons. One, less equipment to maintain and update. These duties become the responsibility of the hosting company. Another reason is flexibility. If an entire office needs to move down the block, simply pick up the phones and go. Another reason is feature access.  Advanced features can be rented for a fraction of the cost to own.

There are many different hosted companies out there. Too many in fact. The industry is rapidly changing. Some companies’ service perform better than others. It is challenge navigating the landscape.
